Who are Direct Support Workers (DSWs)?

DSWs are professionals who work with older adults and individuals with disabilities.

DSWs provide a wide variety of supports such as daily living activities, community integration, skill development, emotional & behavioral health, and maintaining physical health. DSWs work in a variety of settings, including private homes, day programs, and group homes. They also assist individuals as they navigate their communities, schools, and workplaces. The goal of a DSW is to help older adults and individuals with disabilities live as independently as possible and to improve their quality of life.

There are two ways to find work as a Direct Support Worker (DSW).

Agency-Based Care

In this model, you are hired, trained, and supervised by a home care agency or disability provider. They will schedule you to work with their clients. You can use the directory below to find organizations that are hiring DSWs in your area.

Self-Directed Care

In this model, you are hired, trained, and supervised by the person who needs support. They will use a Financial Management Services (FMS) company to manage your payroll, but the individual you support is your employer. To find self-directed employers who are looking for DSWs, use the Rewarding Work matching service registry, which is available statewide.

DSWs can combine employment across the agency-based and self-directed care models if they wish.
